The Perfect Kill:21 laws for Assassins is a part memoir, part political science book that provides rules or laws for how modern assassins should act and think. Written by a former CIA officer, the book describes what it takes to be a successful political assassin in the modern age. The laws for the book were modeled on the terrorist Imad Mugniyah, described in the book by his alias Hajj Radwan, who the author clearly thinks of as the preeminent assassin in modern times. The author was involved in the hunt for Mugniyah which makes his knowledge of him and his organization alot more interesting. The book and author clearly describe Mugniyah as perhaps the most dangerous terrorist leader in modern times and a man who has planned and killed heads of states, CIA station chiefs, and Israeli generals. That we don't know much about this man, even after his death makes him all the more mysterious and deadly. Perhaps his most astonishing feat is having stayed alive for almost 3 decades of terrorist activity when the Israelis systematically killed all his comrades. After a "career" that started in the early 1980s, it was only in 2008 that he was killed, allegedly by the CIA and Mossad in Syria. This book is a interesting study of political violence and the man the author considers it's modern day master. The book is very easy to read and hard to put down, the case studies of modern assassinations by other terrorist groups and intelligence agencies are also interesting as well. The only problem with the book is that there is basically no back ground knowledge provided. Readers who have no knowledge of terrorism especially in the cold war era where groups like the Red Army Faction, IRA, ETA, and Hezbollah operated, may struggle to understand the book.
