I chose this as my Amazon “First Read” for April because the write-up made it seem very intriguing: part literary novel, part psychological thriller about a former military intelligence officer from China who marries an American and moves to the Bay area and then begins an online relationship with a secret admirer leading to disastrous results.I’m about a third of the way through; and I’m struggling. For me, the problem is with the writing: it's wholly expository and limits itself only to what the main character is thinking and feeling about her past and what’s going on in the present. There’s barely any dialogue; but there’s a ton of backstory. There’s a whole lot of telling; but very little showing. So it’s difficult, at least for me, to get caught up in the story. And I’m having some problems with believability. She’s a former military intelligence officer from China (and therefore supposedly pretty savvy), and yet she willingly enters into an e-mail or chat relationship (we’re not quite sure which) with someone she doesn’t know who’s obviously been spying on her—putting her marriage at risk? Seems highly unlikely.Potential readers might want to give the “Look Inside” a thorough examination before deciding whether to proceed with “The Secret Talker.”
